After reading about Master Hung in the Vancouver Sun, I went down to his store to buy some roasted pork and char siew. The roasted pork is the best I have tasted, the skin is crispy. Most other places sell roasted pork with lots of fat and rather chewy hard skin but this was just done to perfection. I put the leftovers in the fridge and it was still good the next day.
As for their barbecue pork, it was sliced for me and without asking, they added some barbecue sauce to it. What was special about their barbecue pork is their quality. I used to buy barbecue pork even in some chinatown stores for 3.99 a pound but half of them have to be thrown away as they are full of tendons and fat. I used the remainder barbecue pork for charsiu paus and they were great.
I strongly recommend that you try out his wares if you haven't. Next time, I will try his barbecue duck and his soy & salt baked chicken. I must admit his price is a little hefty but I prefer to pay a little more for quality.
Easily the best roast pork anywhere, you can always ask for higher end menu items ahead of time. Their head chef comes from Top Gun and Master Gun (Ah Gun or Gun See Fu) makes excellent stewed abalone, shark's fin and geoduck but you must reserve these items ahead of time. Prices for higher end off the menu dishes are a steal compared to the higher end restaurants with absolutely no difference in quality.
The only thing that's not quite up to par may be their service but hey, they only have that many servers working in there at any time. Notwithstanding this small set back, the end price for your very high end banquet will definitely leave you with a smile on your face. Compared to Top Gun, you can expect to pay 40% to 50% less than what you'll be charged elsewhere. I highly recommend this little known eatery based on numerous visits there.
Been there several times in last year..awesome service, great food for a great price!! I would highly recommend making reservations due to popularity or be prepared to wait! Will be returning customer for a long time )
excellent food, great price, quick service, can't taste any MSG..we now go there on a regular basis
We had been eating at the restaurant a couple of times already, but last night was the first time we ate during the restaurants busy period (6-7 pm dinner). You can tell how well a restaurant is run by going there during their busy period, how their staff is able to handle the volume.
When we ordered, we also asked for 4 glasses of water. Few minutes went by, so we asked again (this time a different waitress walked by). She said wait a bit in Cantonese. Again, a few minutes went by, so we flagged down the same person, and again she said wait a bit and walked away. REALLY?? When you have to ask for water 3 times, that is poor service!
One of the waitresses there sounded very bossy and did not crack a smile on her face. In fact, hardly any of the staff there had a smile. Sure, I understand its busy, but you need to be friendly at ALL TIMES, especially to your paying customers! She was already trying to hurry us out by clearing what empty plates she can see from our small table. Funny, how when we asked for the bill, it came right away!
So because of the lack of customer service, we decided they didnt deserve a tip. So we just paid the bill amount, which was $18, and yes they only accept cash. We left the money on the table, and exited the restaurant. After we had just stepped out for a few seconds, we hear one of the waitresses storming out the door saying that we didnt pay enough. THAT was definitely a WTF moment. So we gave her what cash we had in our wallet ($2 or so of change) as tip.
Its a pity that we wont be returning to this restaurant again. And we definitely would NOT RECOMMEND this restaurant to anyone! The service was slow, attitude was bad, and to top it all off, they chase you down for the tip, which is legally not even required here!! Yeah! WTF!
